“I’m Broken”: The Duke Lacrosse Rape Accuser, 10 Years Later
The woman at the centre of the Duke University lacrosse player rape scandal has been charged with trying to kill her boyfriend, police said. Crystal Mangum is accused of stabbing the man, named locally as Reggie Wilson, in the chest after an argument in the early hours of Sunday morning in the apartment they share in Durham, North Carolina. The year-old was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, while Wilson was recovering in hospital. Accused: Crystal Mangum has been charged with murder after Reginald Daye died in hospital after being stabbed.
The case captivated the country, with the media breathlessly reporting the statements of prosecutor Mike Nifong, who was later fired, disbarred and imprisoned for 24 hours, and then those of the players' defense attorneys in a seemingly endless loop of contradictions. In April , North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said there was "no credible evidence that an attack occurred at that house on that night," dropped the charges against the athletes and declared them innocent. Mangum is serving a prison sentence of up to 18 years for the murder of her boyfriend. I visited with Crystal Mangum in November ,nearly seven years after the alleged incident at North Buchanan.
